Amazon Kindle Fire Hacked to run Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwitch

Well that didn’t take very long. Amazon’s Kindle Fire tablet, which you’ve likely seen gifted quite a bit this holiday season, has been hacked to run a “pre-alpha” version of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. The enterprising hackers at xda-developers have put together an "pre-alpha" version of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich for the Kindle Fire, marking the first time we've seen Amazon's budget tablet running the latest and greatest version of Android.

‘A hacker named Steven has posted a video of Ice Cream Sandwich running on the Kindle Fire,' PC World reported, ‘along with more information in the XDA Developers forums. The hack is incomplete, lacking support for audio, Wi-Fi, the accelerometer and the light sensor. Also, transitions look a bit choppy, but it's a start.’

The hack, which is based on the custom Android firmware CyanogenMod 9 , is certainly far from complete. Audio and graphical glitches (especially while playing videos) abound, and touch screen interaction seems fairly unresponsive, according to the given video from Liliputing.

Still, there's bound to be a lot of interest in making the $199 tablet run the most recent version of Android, so we expect to see a lot of rapid progress as we'll keep you updated. If you have anything to say about that or want to hear anything from us related to this, just leave a comment.
